For those seeking depression help, many wonder about depression and selfishness. Are depressed people selfish? This is an important question to answer in recognizing depression.
A depressed person may seem selfish, but this doesn't mean they are selfish, nor that all selfish people are depressed.
Depressed people are not "normally" selfish by default. However, their suffering leaves them only enough energy for themselves.

Selfishness can even be one of the signs of depression. The self absorbing thoughts of how bad we have it, how the world around consumes our soul. The depression self talk is usually always about the "me, me, me."
Depression is like having a physical injury; there is too much pain to be able to consider someone else' injuries, pain or even joy. When depressed, being empathetic takes a great amount of effort.
Depressed people suffer so much internally, that they tend to forget everyone else's needs. Or better said, they tend to lack the emotional energy for it. The focus is on oneself; they are trying to get through their own pain.
A depressed person may think they are empathetic to others, and they may normally be good, empathetic people. But the suffering is usually too intense to truly think about others.
A depressed person takes little to no responsibility. They may blame their God, spouse, parents, siblings, landlord, etc. I have yet to see a post on the internet, for example, of somebody being depressed because they are so worried about another person's life.
I've been there, and now recognize that on myself. I also know that it is hard to get out of that self-defeating spin. However, it is totally possible with right type of depression help.
